RiderTua.com – After impressing on his MotoGP debut at the season-opening race in Qatar, Pedro Acosta will reportedly undergo a medical check on Monday after this weekend’s Portuguese GP to assess whether he needs arm pump surgery.
Acosta suddenly dropped from P4 to P9 in Qatar, initially thought to be caused by tire wear. But that was ruled out when his tires were checked afterwards. This means that Acosta’s decline during the race may have been caused by ‘compartment syndrome’, also known as arm pump.
Pedro Acosta May Need Arm Pump Surgery After Portuguese GP
Pedro Acosta is experiencing pain in his left arm which may be caused by poor bike posture, due to changes in the position of the rear height device. The rider from Spain underwent the Sepang and Qatar tests with the device in one position, but changed it for the race.
The pain he felt in Qatar will be followed up within 24 hours after the Portuguese GP. If it’s because of the arm pump, he can undergo surgery because there is a 3 week break until the American GP in Texas.
Arm pump surgery is a very common procedure performed by MotoGP riders. Most drivers on the current grid have undergone surgery at least once to relieve pain or numbness caused by a lack of blood flow.
Acosta appeared very impressive in his MotoGP debut in Qatar, and the highlight was when he dueled and succeeded in overtaking 6-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez. The 19 year old rider is the only rookie on the 2024 grid who is predicted to have a bright future. He is the most hyped rookie since Marquez in 2013.
This weekend in Portimao, the rookie from the GasGas Tech3 team gets another chance to impress, but now he will also focus on his physical limitations.
