RiderTua.com – Yamaha’s flagship superbikes, namely the Yamaha R1 and R1M, have been announced by Yamaha UK that the Yamaha Motor Group will be discontinued. This means that these two motorbikes will no longer be seen on European roads and will probably only be found on the track.

    Discontinued Yamaha R1 and R1M

It is very likely that the Yamaha R1 will continue to be sold, but in the same racing version as the Yamaha R6 Race which is marketed in Europe. Because it is specifically for the track and is no longer street legal, this motorbike doesn’t need to worry about exhaust emissions regulations. Comes without mirrors, special racing seats and without lights.

It’s a shame because this superbike with its characteristic crossplane engine will no longer be seen on European roads. However, the manufacturer seems to be developing a motorbike with a smaller engine. The guess is that it might be the Yamaha R9 that is being eagerly awaited for its arrival.

Reasons why Yamaha is discontinuing its Superbike

Yamaha said that they took this step because the two Yamaha R1 and R1M superbikes cannot pass Euro5+ emissions regulations in Europe. This has also happened to another superbike, namely the Suzuki GSX-R1000R, which was discontinued in 2022.

The model with the smaller engine that Yamaha is currently developing will indeed attract more interest because it is friendlier for beginners and has a relatively lighter weight. Automatically the price is also cheaper compared to a 1,000cc superbike. That’s why Yamaha took this step.
