RiderTua.com – There are concrete plans to introduce a number of new rules for the 2027 MotoGP racing season, which will, among other things, reduce engine capacity to 850 cc. A ban on aerodynamic developments is also currently being discussed.
Jeremy McWilliams (a former rider from Northern Ireland, now involved in KTM’s development work) said, “The starting point for the debate was safety. Dorna argued that the speed should be reduced for the sake of safety because the runoff area of the track does not increase as the speed increases. The discussion was not initiated by the team , that’s an important point. Honestly, in my opinion reducing cubication doesn’t help at all.”
MotoGP Becomes 850cc Will Be Just As Fast

“On the contrary. At least that’s what happened after the decision to reduce from 1000 to 800cc. Within a year, the bike became equally fast even on a straight track. Crazy speed in corners is very important. Today the electronics, chassis and tires allow incredible speed here. Reducing “cubing will not change anything. If we talk about performance, then the speed must be limited,” he stressed.
What about aerodynamics? “I think in terms of safety, there’s no point in throwing the work of aerodynamicists into the trash. We’ve seen that aero solutions also help control the bike better. So I think it’s a step backwards,” McWilliams replied.
Is there a way to improve security? Jeremy McWilliams emphasized, “One measure that could be taken is, for example, shorter distances which in my opinion have the highest risk, so that the tire will lose its performance. Aggressive set-ups and super grippy tires increase the risk. But in any case, it will be difficult to reducing the speed using the ideas that are being considered. I’m not saying we can’t talk about the rules, but 850cc will not reduce the speed. That’s for sure.”
So reducing the engine capacity from 1000cc to 850 for a prototype bike will be in vain, because the manufacturer will try to make the bike faster, maybe even because the engine weight becomes lighter, the bike will also increase or still go fast… Maybe in the future there will be the best solution because with 850cc the prestige of big 1000cc bikes will be eroded as Moto2 approaches…
