Toyota Talks About the Potential of the Avanza Hybrid in Indonesia
Regarding hybrid cars, Toyota remained number one in the market throughout last year with models such as the Kijang Innova Zenix and Yaris Cross HEV being its flagship. Even though the results are quite satisfactory, there are quite a few consumers who think that the selling price cannot be said to be affordable. Even with the Yaris Cross HEV being sold for under Rp. 500 million, it is still considered quite expensive.
Seeing that the entry level car market is quite promising, Toyota should be able to make a hybrid version for the Avanza, considering its very high popularity in its segment. Moreover, models such as the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid and Mitsubishi Xpander HEV have been launched on the market. It was stated that a number of consumers were starting to ask about the potential for the Avanza Hybrid to be released in Indonesia.
Subsidies are needed
Toyota admits that alone could be a good consideration, but the problem is the subsidies. Currently, existing subsidies are only given to electric cars, while hybrid cars are not needed because they are considered less capable of reducing carbon emissions. Even though this type of car can still reduce emissions, the selling price is more affordable than the BEV model.
Without subsidies, it is clear that the selling price of a hybrid car cannot be set simply as affordable. Toyota still has to carry out a number of market research to see this potential, and so far there has been no follow-up. Still, they will continue to present their best products to Indonesian consumers.
