RiderTua.com – A new patent filed by BMW Motorrad regarding Active Aero Winglet technology for the S 1000 RR, their flagship superbike. This sophisticated winglet is still being developed further, and perhaps later it will be applied to the BMW M 1000 RR racing motorbike at WSBK.
New BMW Motorrad Patent
On superbikes, many manufacturers apply winglets to their flagship motorbikes with the aim of increasing downforce on the front. This will also increase stability, both when going straight or when cornering on the track. One of them is the BMW S 1000 RR.

This patent explains that the German manufacturer has developed active winglets, which can move to maintain a horizontal position/parallel to the road. The winglets will have hinges and be attached to an actuator.
Will It be Applied in BMW Racing Motorbikes at WSBK?
Interestingly, at the WSBK event there are regulations that say that WSBK homologated superbikes are allowed to use active aero on their racing motorbikes. As long as the mass production models sold also use the same technology, perhaps BMW will be the first to present active aero at the WSBK event.
Detailed information about the mechanism system is still not clear and complete. However, it is estimated that this technology will be connected to a Six-Axis IMU system whose function is to measure the tilt angle of the motorbike while running.
