RiderTua.com – Lin Jarvis has been in charge of the Yamaha racing project for the last 26 years. But he will resign from that position after the 2024 MotoGP season. This news emerged one week after Yamaha succeeded in extending Fabio Quartararo’s contract until the end of 2026 with the highest salary in MotoGP. After defending El Diablo, the tuning fork manufacturer has plans to return to winning ways.
Jarvis confirmed, “This will be my last season at Yamaha, I will stop at the end of this year. Later I will decide what I will do and what I will dedicate my time to.”
Lin Jarvis explained that he started a factory team in 1999. It has been a very long period. Now he is 66 years old and starting to get a little tired of traveling. Jarvis has been doing this for 26 years. It is incredible that the same person can successfully lead a project in a factory for such a long period of time.
According to Jarvis, the time has come to do something new, because now is the most ideal time to make changes and you must be able to close the era and start with something new, in harmony. This is the best moment for both of them (Yamaha and Jarvis). “We have determined the candidate who will most likely be my replacement, although it is not official yet. But the person who will take over my position in January next year is someone from the Yamaha group,” stressed Jarvis.
Jarvis leads the team as Yamaha celebrates wins in a very impressive season, including all the title wins achieved by legend Valentino Rossi with the Iwata-based manufacturer in Japan.
Although Jarvis’ departure means ‘important’ positions have to be filled, the Yamaha project looks to be in good hands having recruited several key technicians including new Technical Director Max Bartolini who previously worked at Ducati.
Even before the 2024 season started, Jarvis said, “This year is my 25th year, both as managing director and team principal at the factory Yamaha team. So this is a significant achievement, but I’m not getting any younger,” he said. Jarvis also said that his hair is getting grayer (grey).. So he thinks he will change someday. And Yamaha needs to bring in a new generation.
“As a company or corporation it’s always like that. We have to prepare for the transition and continuity of the business in the future. So I will definitely be here throughout the season, in my current role. Subject to good health and everything. Going forward let’s see. “But currently we are in the process of choosing and deciding what management will take us into the next era,” added the English team manager.
Lin Jarvis also assured that his replacement would be someone from within the Yamaha Motor Group. So they don’t want to take anyone from outside. According to him, the nationality of his potential successor is not important. What is important is a person’s mindset, mentality and experience. So it doesn’t matter whether it is European or non-European.
“But Yamaha needs someone with experience. Most of the people in the group who have the experience to take on that role are most likely Europeans,” concluded Jarvis.
