Marc Marquez: MotoGP Needs to Reduce Aero

RiderTua.com – Maybe now Marc Marquez has switched to one of the most aerodynamically sophisticated bikes, namely the Ducati Desmosedici, even though the Gresini team rider is still urging MotoGP to reduce the use of aero in the future.

The former Repsol Honda rider has never hidden his dislike of aero devices, although in the past many have said he would feel differently if he rode one of the bikes with aero advantages.

That is what is happening now, after moving from Repsol Honda to Gresini Ducati. However, Marc Marquez’s opinion remains unchanged. When asked about proposed efforts to slow down bike performance for the next series of technical regulations which will start in 2027, Marquez said, “For me, the first thing we need to do is reduce the aerodynamics. For the future of MotoGP, I don’t know if I will stay here but in 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, we need to reduce the aerodynamics.”

The Baby Alien further explained, “This will make the bike slower. Because now we use a lot of torque because there is no wheelie. And we are very late braking. We only need to follow the racing line, we can’t fight the bike. And it’s more difficult to overtake other riders.”

“So, the main thing that needs to be done is to work on it. Then, if the bike is slower, the performance will be better. Why? Because the people watching on TV don’t realize that we are racing at 360km/h or 340km/h. This is still over 300!”

“But they need to improve the regulations because now there is more and more aero. And we saw this year, all the manufacturers not just one, the bikes look like Formula 1. With the rear winglet, not just the front, it creates downforce in the full-tilt corners. So we need to think about this,” concluded Marc Marquez.

The rules are not yet official, but MotoGP manufacturers appear to agree that aerodynamic dimensions will need to be reduced by 2027, along with smaller 850cc engine capacities and the removal of ride-height devices.

KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer questioned whether aero reductions could be made before 2027. “Aerodynamics plays a role in performance in every acceleration, high speed, deceleration, cornering. That’s also why, maybe in the last 2 years the pace of lap times has become crazier than before, because “That’s a big factor in lap times,” said Pit.

The German KTM boss added, “This aero is quite interesting, but I think from a promoter and regulatory perspective, now we need to be careful not to go too far. So I think we need a limiting factor as soon as possible. Maybe we don’t need to wait until next year 2027 by limiting this.”
