RiderTua.com – Jorge Lorenzo said that the opinion of Gigi Dall’Igna (Ducati Corse racing boss) will be an important factor in determining Marc Marquez’s next steps in the Ducati political environment. Currently the 31 year old rider rides a 1 year old Desmosedici GP23 for the Gresini satellite team but is only under contract for 1 year.
Marc, Enea Bastianini and Jorge Martin will certainly compete to become Francesco Bagnaia’s teammate at the factory Ducati team next year. Lorenzo emphasized that although Marquez has deviated from Ducati’s preference for developing young riders, Dall’Igna wants to keep him.
Jorge Lorenzo emphasized that from the outside, it seemed like Ducati was not too enthusiastic about Marquez’s arrival. He doesn’t think that’s the case with Dall’Igna. Even the 37 year old former rider would say that it was Marc who the genius Italian engineer liked the most. Lorenzo speaks from the outside, not the inside.
Lorenzo doesn’t know why it’s not visible on Ducati. When they see Marc performing so well with Ducati and most importantly committed to staying with the factory and not changing ‘colours’ again or returning to Honda, they will support him. “Having Marc Marquez is a guarantee of having a rider who will fight for the world title,” added Lorenzo.
The two-time MotoGP champion suggested that Ducati’s trust in Marc Marquez could start this year, by upgrading his 1 year old bike. In the past at Satellite Ducati riders not only received upgrades, but were given completely new bikes. Riders who ride old bikes are given new parts. Lorenzo doesn’t know if it could happen again, he said.
Lorenzo added that clearly, at regulatory level Ducati cannot modify the engine and they will have to make do with chassis, electronics and aerodynamic improvements. The strategy and relationship that Marquez has with Ducati and Gigi Dall’Igna are the main things. Dall’Igna is very happy with Marc joining the red team squad.
Gigi wants to have the best and strongest rider in his squad and Lorenzo is sure that if Marquez continues to perform well, Dall’Igna and Ducati will continue to use him with his brand in the future, added Lorenzo.
